UPPER MARLBORO, MD — March 4, 2026 — The Brian Westbrook Foundation is proud to announce the expansion of the 36 Ways Junior HorseMasters Program in 2026 following a highly successful pilot year in 2025. More than a riding program, 36 Ways is a youth leadership initiative rooted in the Foundation’s core values: integrity, work ethic, family, discipline, and service.
A native of Fort Washington, Maryland, Brian Westbrook enjoyed a distinguished nine‑year NFL career as one of the league’s most dynamic dual‑threat running backs. Drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2002, he became a two‑time Pro Bowler (2004, 2007) and helped lead the Eagles to multiple NFC Championship appearances and a Super Bowl run. All while wearing number 36. In 2005, he purchased the Westbrook Horse Farm to support his growing involvement in horsemanship, horse breeding, and riding. A devoted husband and father of three, Westbrook is a seasoned businessman deeply committed to philanthropy. In 2017, he founded The Brian Westbrook Foundation, an organization focused on empowering youth through education, vocational training, and expanded opportunities.
Brian Westbrook shared, “The lessons learned on the farm mirror the lessons that carry you through life — discipline, patience, accountability, and heart. We started this program because we believe every child deserves access to experiences that build character and open doors. Seeing these young people grow into leaders reminds us why this work matters.”
Building Skills That Matter
Created by Executive Director Janet Percell Frazer, the Junior HorseMasters Program teaches foundational horsemanship skills. These include grooming, handling, nutrition, veterinary basics, riding skills, and stable management. Hands‑on responsibilities reinforce empathy, responsibility, and attention to detail. Participation in local horse shows helps students ages eight through seventeen set goals, practice resilience, and build confidence under pressure.
“Our young people deserve spaces where they can grow into leaders with confidence, compassion, and purpose,” said Janet Percell Frazer. “Horses have a remarkable way of revealing a child’s strengths. When a student realizes they can communicate with a 1,000‑pound animal, they start believing in what they can accomplish in the rest of their lives. This program is about building that belief.”
In its pilot year, the program served 82 participants and presented 38 Horsemanship Certificates. This shows measurable improvements in students' confidence, leadership, and horsemanship skills.
Life Skills Through Connection
Working with horses teaches patience, emotional awareness, and integrity. The 36 Ways initiative intentionally expands access to equestrian experiences for minority youth. This increases representation and inclusion within the sport.
Leadership in Action
Leadership is built into every element of the program. Students strengthen communication, teamwork, and initiative while serving as ambassadors during volunteer events for visiting youth groups. These moments allow students to share their skills, mentor newcomers, and grow their leadership presence.
A Community Effort
Family involvement is a key part of the program’s success. Parents and guardians are encouraged to participate in events, support student progress, and help foster a welcoming, community‑driven environment at the farm.
Opportunities to Grow and Compete
Students also participate in local horse shows, focusing on personal development rather than competition. These experiences encourage perseverance and pride in individual achievement.
A Parent’s Perspective
36 Ways has already made a meaningful impact on families across the region. One parent shared:
“I’ve watched my daughter grow more confident week after week. She used to be a little unsure of herself, but working with the horses has brought out a level of responsibility and confidence we hadn’t seen before. The staff here treats every child like they matter, and the change in her has been incredible. This program is truly a blessing.”
Why It Matters
The 36 Ways Junior HorseMasters Program uses the powerful connection between youth and horses to build character, confidence, and leadership. Its 2026 expansion reflects a commitment to ensuring more young people have access to these transformative experiences. 36 Ways is now welcoming new participants, volunteers, and supporters.
