Voices from the Farm

These stories are composites drawn from the kinds of transformations we witness every season. Names and details have been changed to protect privacy.

Marcus, age 13

Prince George's County

Junior HorseMasters

I never thought I could be responsible for something so big.

When Marcus first arrived at the farm, he wouldn't make eye contact. By week six of Junior HorseMasters, he was leading grooming sessions and teaching younger kids how to approach a horse safely. His mother called it a transformation she hadn't seen coming.

Outcome

Completed full skill progression; selected as junior peer mentor

Destiny, age 16

Prince George's County

Youth Entrepreneurship Program

I built a real business plan. I pitched it in front of adults. They listened.

Destiny joined YEP skeptical that anything at school had prepared her for the real world. Eight weeks later she shared a mobile tutoring concept with a panel of community leaders and walked away with a certificate, a plan, and a new sense of what was possible.

Outcome

Completed business plan; enrolled in follow-on cohort

Jordan, age 11

Prince George's County

Summer Equestrian Camp

The farm felt like the one place where nobody was judging me.

Jordan came to summer camp after a difficult school year. The combination of horse care, team responsibilities, and daily reflection gave him a structure he hadn't experienced before. Counselors noted measurable growth in his confidence and willingness to take on leadership roles.

Outcome

Returned for second camp season; nominated for junior counselor track

Aaliyah, age 10

Prince George's County

Junior HorseMasters

I used to be scared of horses. Now I can't imagine my life without them.

Aaliyah arrived at her first Junior HorseMasters session holding her grandmother's hand and refusing to go near the stalls. Over eight sessions she learned to groom, lead, and eventually ride. By the final session she was the one coaxing a nervous classmate toward the fence.

Outcome

Completed all eight sessions; returned for the next program cycle

Priya's mother

Prince George's County

36 Ways Equestrian

My daughter came home standing taller. That's the only way I can describe it.

Priya's mother enrolled her in the 36 Ways program hoping for a confidence boost. What she got was a daughter who now sets goals, tracks her own progress, and talks openly about what she wants to achieve. The horsemanship was the vehicle and the growth was the destination.

Outcome

Advanced two skill levels; parent reported significant confidence improvement

Elijah, age 15

Prince George's County

STEAM Camp

I didn't know science could feel like this. Like it actually matters.

Elijah joined the STEAM camp expecting worksheets. Instead he found himself testing soil samples, mapping plant growth cycles, and debating sustainable food systems with peers from across the county. He left with a project idea he was genuinely excited to keep working on.

Outcome

Completed program; expressed intent to pursue environmental studies
